Minions are the little, yellow, avidly funny creatures that have long toil for movie watchers. Their initial look was in the 2010 animation Despicable Me, and they’ve gone on to be a set symbol. And whether or not you know the film, the cute little fellows speak their own language, wear wacky camouflage overalls, and get up to unholy mischief. Minions are the creation of Illumination Entertainment.
In the Despicable Me movies, there are hundreds of them, purveying the same ideas as a globally marketed toothpaste does, aiming at hyper-consumer children in a globalized world. Since Despicable Me (2010), there have been sequels and sidekick movies, including a spin-off dedicated entirely to the little yellow guys called Minions (2015). All those minions are different and have individual personalities and features. But they also have several things in common: they are all attached to their masters (by their own choice or at least without rebelling at all costs); they are childish; and, significantly, they look ridiculous (are born that way?).
Their upcoming installment, Despicable Me 4, had another release date: July 3, 2024. The film makes viewers laugh their hearts out with a whole new set of adventures of Gru and his Minions. The film features the voice-over of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig and has already grossed more than $770 million around the world, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2024.
