Who Is a Final Girl Anyway?
The Final Girl is a classic horror movie trope, referring to a female character—usually the protagonist or one of the main characters—who makes it through the terrifying events of the film. The term was first introduced by Carol J. Clover in her book Men, Women, and Chainsaws, which explores gender roles in modern horror films.
On the flip side, there’s the “Final Boy,” a male character who survives in a similar fashion. However, Final Boys are far less common in slasher movies, as the lead characters in these films tend to be women.
How Do You Know If You’re a Final Girl?
You can feel the will to survive. In horror movies, Final Girls are often either naturally equipped with survival instincts or discover their inner “warrior” as they face off against the monster. Somewhere along their tragic journey, they find the strength to fight back instead of becoming the next victim. If you sense that spark of survivalism in yourself, you might just be a Final Girl.
